West Windsor Township is a township in Mercer County, New Jersey. West Windsor was initially established in 1682 when William Penn signed a treaty with the Lenni Lenape tribe in the area. West Windsor Township was established by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1797, and incorporated in 1798, as one of the state’s initial group of 104 townships. Grover’s Mill in West Windsor was the site Orson Welles chose for the Martian invasion in his infamous 1938 radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds. Princeton University’s satellite campus is located in West Windsor. NRG Energy has its corporate headquarters there and it is also the site of the West Windsor Campus of the Mercer County Community College. In 2008, Forbes listed West Windsor as the 15th most affluent neighborhood in the U.S. Today, West Windsor can still identify the six farming villages that were a part of the original area.
